Scrabble Words Without Vowels

Sooner or later you draw CRWTHS-shaped chaos: seven consonants and nothing to join them. These words, which contain no A, E, I, O or U at all, are how you turn that rack into points instead of a wasted exchange.

Y is doing the vowel's job in most of them, and a few manage without any vowel sound at all.

The ones worth memorising

SH, HM, MM, BRR, PST, TSK, NTH, WRY, SHY, THY, WHY, CWM and CRWTH cover most consonant-heavy emergencies. CWM and CRWTH are Welsh borrowings and are valid in common lexicons, but check yours.

When to exchange instead

If the best no-vowel play scores under about ten points and leaves you with the same problem, exchange. Keep one or two combining consonants such as S, T, R or N and dump the rest — a lost turn is cheaper than three lost turns.
