Reaching the premium squares
On the standard board, the double letter and double word squares sit four cells from many common anchors. A four-letter word is often the shortest play that touches one, which is why it beats a longer word that lands nowhere useful.
Keeping a workable leave
Playing four tiles means drawing four. Choose the four that leaves you with a balanced remainder: dropping two consonants and two vowels keeps the next rack playable, while dumping all your vowels usually does not.
